Step-by-Step Process to Apply for a Canada Study Visa
Step 1: Get Admission Offer from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Apply to a recognized college or university in Canada.
Once accepted, you’ll receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from the institution.
Step 2: Gather Required Documents
You will need the following:
Valid passport
Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a DLI
Proof of funds (tuition + living expenses for at least one year)
Passport-size photographs
Statement of Purpose (SOP) – explaining your study plan and career goals
Educational transcripts and certificates
English language proficiency test scores (IELTS/TOEFL)
Medical exam (if required)
Police clearance certificate (if required)
Step 3: Apply Online or Through Paper Application
Submit your application online at the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) website
Pay the visa application fee (CAD 150)
Provide biometrics at the nearest VAC (Visa Application Centre)
Step 4: Attend Biometrics Appointment
After applying, you’ll receive a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). Visit a local VAC to submit your fingerprints and photograph.
Step 5: Visa Processing & Additional Requests
The visa office may request additional documents or an interview
Processing time is generally between 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the country
Step 6: Receive Decision
If approved, you’ll receive:
Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction
If you’re from a country where a visa is required, you’ll also get a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Step 7: Travel to Canada
Carry all important documents, including:
POE Letter of Introduction
Valid passport
LOA
